The OSGP Alliance gathered leading security experts together to emphasize the importance of security solutions for smart metering and smart grid applications.
Amsterdam, The Netherlands, October 5, 2016 - The OSGP Alliance (www.osgp.org), an independent, global, not-for-profit association comprised of prominent utilities, systems integrators, service providers as well as smart grid equipment and software product developers, announced that it successfully completed a Smart Grid Security Summit on September 28th in Gdansk, Poland with industry and national leadership.
In collaboration with the Polish Ministry of Energy, the OSGP Alliance organized a Security Summit that was attended by the Ministry, utilities, and vendors including leading security and industry experts. The Keynote Speakers were Andrzej Kazimierski from the Polish Ministry of Energy and Mariusz Busilo from Mazovia Cluuter ICT / Supervisory Board PGE EXATEL, who presented information regarding the Polish Ministry of Energy Grid Security Strategy and Legal Challenges.
The other distinguished speakers were Tomasz Szalach from Ernst & Young, Emil Gurevitch from NES, Mariusz Jurczyk from Tauron, Aleksander Babs from the Institute of Power Engineering, Poul Eriksen from Develco and Bo Danielsen from SEAS-NVE in Denmark. Key topics included defensive strategies against common attacks, NES Smart Grid Solution security approach, Tauron’s Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) Case Study, comprehensive smart metering security assessments, home area networking security, and a roundtable discussion with industry leaders centered on today and future trends.
The participants and speakers all thought the Security Summit was very informative and of great value balancing the legal and governmental perspective with practical implementations of approaches to cyber security in smart grid technology. Attendees were able to learn about important security implementations and capabilities in the Open Smart Grid Protocol (OSGP) that utilities are successfully using in various OSGP based smart grid implementations. One of the highlights was the opportunity to learn about real world projects, such as Tauron’s AMIplus Smart City Wrocław project. Tauron’s AMI Project Manager Mariusz Jurczyk presented a case study that explained how Tauron put great emphasis on security in its 350k OSGP based project that aligns with the recommendations outlined by the Ministry of Energy and presented by EY at the Summit.
“When we are dealing with meter and billing data we are not only dealing with business critical data, we are also dealing with customer private data. That’s is a great responsibility that we, as an industry, need to take seriously,” said Bo Danielsen, the Head of Installation and Metering at SEAS-NVE. “With the tremendous possibilities that come with digital metering technology, also comes the threat from cyber hackers and criminals. It´s a common threat, so we should seek common solutions and share our experience and knowhow. And that is exactly why we at SEAS-NVE started the collaboration with NES and DTU, and that is exactly why I am so happy to see the OSGP alliance putting a focus on this subject.”
“The event was outstanding and a great opportunity to collaborate with other industry experts,” said Andy Robinson, the Chief Technology Officer of NES and also master of ceremony of the event. He added, “Cyberattacks against the power grid are very real. Collaboration between industry and government is very important for the development of security policies and standards while still enabling innovation. As a member of the OSGP Alliance, NES believes security is fundamental to everything we do.”

The XXVI Economic Forum in Krynica speaks not only about economic theory, but also about practical solutions that can be applied in our homes, such as smart electricity meters.
About how the so called smart metering of electric power consumption works, explains Mariusz Jurczyk, project manager for AMI Tauron Distribution.
- These meters are a new generation of electronics that allow the measurement of energy at an hourly rate. They help to build awareness of how to use electricity as efficiently as possible. They also provide a wealth of information to the distributor of energy on the work of the power grid - explains the guest of Polish Radio 24.
Such devices are capable, says Mariusz Jurczyk, of controlling the power consumption of the public.
- The devices can also allow remote change of tariffs, along with remote enabling and disabling of the installation of a recipient depending on various external events. We can control it remotely - explains the expert.
Power consumption can be tracked on your phone or tablet
Smart meters also allow the tracking of energy consumption in our homes, such as the consumption of the washing machine and fridge, for example, on your mobile phone or tablet after installing the appropriate application.
- With this application, customers can see at what time their energy consumption was significant. This will make them consider that devices in the household are causing considerable energy consumption, and that there is a need to replace them with something more efficient - says Mariusz Jurczyk.
Collector visits are no longer needed
Smart meters allow for remote reading, so collector visits to the homes of customers are no longer necessary.
- We have a remote reading system, and on this basis we will charge our customers. We will certainly monitor the meters, their technical conditions, proper functioning and, once every few years, we will do auditing control and verification. - says Mariusz Jurczyk.
Not only smart meters, but the socket too
The guest of Polish Radio 24 added, in addition to smart meters, customers of Tauron may also equip their homes with smart sockets.
- It allows you to remotely disable a device that is plugged into such a socket, eg. a washing machine, a refrigerator, lights, a computer - explains the expert.
Such accurate control of electricity consumption also allows customers to reflect on the change in tariffs and thus look for additional savings.
- The application allows customers to see how the electricity bill would look in a different tariff - notes Mariusz Jurczyk.
If the client decides to change the tariff, the operator can apply this change remotely.
Working with OZE
Smart meters are also prepared to support renewable energy sources. They can be relied on to manage the excess electricity from prosumers network.
The data collected by smart meters, assures Mariusz Jurczyk, are safe, and communication between all elements of the smart grid is encrypted using the technology used in banking, for example.

On May 31st , Landskrona Energi, along with Petter Pettersen from NES, had about 20 people from the Polish Ministry of Energy visit Landskrona Energi in Sweden, including Poland´s Energy Minister Krysztof Tchorzewski . The visit was prompted by Landskrona Energi’s successful participation in a pilot project with NES for next-generation smart electricity meters. As Poland faces a point of changing regulations for energy metering and optimalization, the Ministry of Energy in Poland wanted to learn more about the project in Sweden.
Rickard Alexandersson, project manager of Landskrona Energy said: "We are impressed with the strong cooperation between NES and Metrima and the fact that the NES Patagonia platform is secure and provides the highest SLA's on the market in a multi-application platform. The project shows a very fast return on investment.”.
Mr. Alexandersson added: ”Landskrona Energi’s tests have shown that the NES System delivers the required functionality and performance, including support for multi-utility metering.”
Johan Holmstedt, CEO of Landskrona Energy spoke about the company's history, cooperation with Öresundskraft and Kraftringen. In response to a question of how cooperation between competitors could be successful, Johan Holmstedt replied “Trust!”, which was followed by spontaneous applause.
John also spoke about the company's future investments in Landskrona including the continued rollout of fiber, an even greater range of services , and future charging infrastructure.
Petter Pettersen from NES stated, “Sweden and Poland are very important and progressive markets. It is an honor to receive guests from other countries who want to see how we in the Nordic region are successfully implementing the new EU rules, and Landskrona Energi is such a shining example. Of course, it is also great to see how satisfied our customers are with our solutions and our commitment!”
Telecom and IT industry has in recent decades undergone a revolution. It is predicted that the energy industry will see similar upheavals, and that we can only sense the start of what will come in the foreseeable future. Networked Energy Service is a US company that has great visions for the possibilities that exist. We talked to Michael Anderson, who is Chief Executive Officer of the Group.
Network Energy Service is the result of a far-sighted investor group with vision to create a new era of energy efficiency through technology that will modernize network, especially distribution.
Initially Echelon, a prominent publicly traded company in the technology industry, founded by Silicon Valley legend Mike Markkula, who was also one of the men behind Apple. The ideas they had back in the 80s was to create a control system in the form of a universal piece that could be integrated in any electrical device. How would they create a control network for automation including lighting, ventilation, pumps and elevators. A mechanism to streamline and simplify the control of electrical devices. Early in the 2000s came ENEL, a major global power company, on the pitch with the desire to use the technology in what was the first smart grid rollout in distribution network with 30 million smart meters.
- It started with smart meters, but they had a much larger vision. About really using the meters as a sensor to monitor the network. Bring data back and create new insights into what is happening. That way they could make regular advances in reliability, efficiency and safety.
- Five years later we launched the Network Energy Service system that includes smart meters, or let's say smart sensors, which collect large amounts of data. Not only consumption data, but data on the network, locations, energy and technical efficiency. We clarified the companies to move beyond just automatic meter reading. We opened a new world that gave great success with Vattenfall and E-ON in Sweden. SEAS-NVE and NRGi in Denmark, Tauron, Poland, Fortum in Finland and Duke Energy in the US. Many of the leading and visionary companies in the global power industry says Michael Anderson.
